During the first year of operations in 2020, Life Science Cares Philadelphia: 

  • established a strong board and board of advisors

  • created opportunities to "care actively"

  • raised and granted $300,000 for emergency COVID relief

  • selected 14 nonprofit partners and granted $270,000


In addition to the founding site in Boston and our local Philadelphia organization, Life Science Cares now has sites in San Diego and the Bay Area in California.


Position Summary:

Life Science Cares Philadelphia (LSC PHL) is currently seeking a dynamic, passionate, and collaborative Executive Director (ED) to lead the continued growth and development of LSC PHL. The ED will be the operating leader of the affiliate organization, reporting to the local Philadelphia Board of Managers.

The ED will be the operational face of the organization, responsible for administration and oversight of all aspects of the affiliate’s activities, including corporate outreach, fundraising, and partnering activities with area nonprofits including organizing volunteer opportunities and supporting the Project Onramp internship program.


The ED will establish and maintain relationships with life science leaders and participating companies as well as nonprofit organizations throughout the greater Philadelphia region. The selected candidate will work with the Board and Chair to define strategy and oversee the budget and financial planning.  The ED will also coordinate with the executive directors of other LSC affiliates.


Essential Job Functions include:

Organizational & Operations

  1. Facilitate and connect corporate volunteers with opportunities at nonprofit partners

  2. Lead development and fundraising activities, in collaboration with the Board

  3. Prepare and execute the LSC PHL budget, with primary signing authority

  4. Develop marketing, social media and PR plans to enhance LSC Philadelphia with pro bono support from public relations agency

  5. Act as primary spokesperson for the organization with Board support

  6. Represent LSC PHL as a member of the Philadelphia philanthropic community

Board administration

  1. Assess, prioritize and recommend recipient organizations for partnership and grant allocations

  2. Establish a Board calendar and develop Board agendas with the Board Chair

  3. Maintain a climate that attracts and retains an active and diverse Board

  4. Cultivate engagement with the Board of Advisors (BoA) and expand membership of the BoA

Financial integrity and growth of the organization

  1. Ensure financial transparency of all transactions and follow applicable financial policies

  2. Work with legal and accounting resources to ensure all legal and financial filings are submitted accurately and on time


  1. Work with the Board to develop and implement a strategic plan

  2. Evaluate and develop metrics of impact


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Located in Philadelphia area

  • Concern for those in need, who are impacted by poverty and social inequality

  • Experience in volunteerism with a preference for experience relevant to survival, education, and sustainability 

  • Experience and comfort in fund raising and knowledge of fundraising strategies and tactics

  • A record of transparent and high integrity leadership

  • Creative, collaborative, entrepreneurial, and action-oriented with an eagerness to roll up one’s sleeves and work hands-on to grow the organization as the sole employee while securing support as needed from board members and third parties

  • Strong written and oral communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent internal and public speaking skills

  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, program development, and tactical execution with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills

  • Proven successful interactions with Boards and high level executives

  • Solid budget management, preparation, and analytical skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people

  • Energetic personality that will attract others to the organization


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Nonprofit experience, preferably in life science, health care, foundations, or philanthropic organizations

  • Some area of technical competency / credibility with life science leadership

  • Experience with online meeting and communication platforms (ex. Zoom, social media platforms, batch emailing, digital newsletters, etc.)

  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge CRM and VolunteerHub

  • Established network of contacts in the Philadelphia area

  • Ambition, passion, vision, integrity, positivity, mission-driven, and self-directed

  • Empathy, humility, willingness to wear all hats, resourceful
